Analysing Thriller/Mystery Opening Sequences - 'Blink Twice'

 'Blink Twice'

  • The opening sequence for 'Blink Twice' starts off with a slow zoom out away from a green frog (slow camera movement to create suspense and anticipation is typical of the genre)
  • It then cuts to a girl lighting incense and scrolling on social media on her phone
  • The editing is quite fast, switching between her hands, close ups of her face and videos on her phone, making the scene a bit more intense
  • She finds a video of a man, called Slater King, and begins to look him up on the internet, searching all different websites, this seems mysterious as we don't know who he is or why she wants to get information about him, instantly creating enigma
  • When she finds a video of Slater King she watches very intensely as we can see her eyes widen with curiosity
  • She seems to be infatuated by him as she doesn't want to look away
  • As someone bangs on the door she jumps because she was too concentrated on watching the interview (pleonastic sounds to create jump scares are common in thrillers)
  • The lighting on her face is split which tells us as the audience that we don't know what kind of person she is yet and makes us wonder what her connection is to Slater (side lighting is a common technique used in thrillers to encourage the audience to be suspicious of a character's motivation)
  • The last part shows her standing in front of a mirror pulling out some hidden money which might make us assume that she is not very wealthy
  • We can also see that she owns a lot of nail polish showing us that she is good at her job as a nail artist
