Analysing Thriller/Mystery Opening Sequences - 'Donnie Darko'

'Donnie Darko'

  • This opening sequence starts off with an establishing shot of the mountains with the sound of heavy wind (isolated settings are common in thrillers)
  • The camera then slowly zooms in onto a young boy, asleep on the floor
  • As the camera gets closer, he begins to wake up and look around
  • As we don't know how he got there or who he is, this creates enigma/a sense of mystery
  • Slow, calming non-diegetic music starts playing while the camera slowly pans around him looking confused (almost acting contrapuntally)
  • There is then a medium close up of the boy, called Donnie, standing in front of the mountains laughing or smiling to himself. This is strange as it is random and we don't know what he is laughing at
  • It cuts to Donnie cycling though a neighbourhood during Halloween
  • We see a man leaf blowing in his garden when a woman approaches him, he points the leaf blower at her until she runs away, this confuses the audience as it is odd and random
  • The director cuts back to Donnie going to his house
  • There is shot of a girl jumping up and down on a trampoline while the mother reads a book and watches Donnie walk into the house looking confused
  • The scene finishes as he opens up the fridge and looks inside while the non-diegetic song becomes quieter
  • This scene is confusing and mysterious as there is no dialogue and we don't know what is happening to the main character
