Opening Scenes Creating Enigma/Mystery - 'Knives Out'

'Knives Out'

The second film I analysed is 'Knives Out'.

It starts off showing a lady walking around with a tray. It also has very quick camera movement and shows lots of face figurine decorations around the house.

It films the lady from many different angles which makes it look like someone is watching her, instantly creating mystery. When she finds the man's dead body there is a statue of a face smiling above him which makes the audience feel quite uneasy.

It has fast-paced, non-diegetic music. All this would make the audience engage more in the film as we want to know who the dead man is and who killed him. This creates enigma, which is a typical way that thriller movies often begin.
