Introducing Characters In Opening Scenes 2 - 'Whiplash'

The next film I am looking at is 'Whiplash'. 

               

The opening scene for this film also introduces the main character. It starts with a black screen with aggressive drums playing, then we are slowly zoomed in to Andrew, who is the main character playing the drums skilfully and fast. 

We can tell Andrew is passionate about playing, as he is alone in his spare time practising. This also shows that he is a loner as he would rather be by himself then with others playing. When another character, Fletcher, walks in Andrew becomes nervous as he wants to impress him because Andrew wants to play in Fletcher's band. 

He wants Fletcher's validation then gets disappointed when he leaves. Fletcher's character is rude and sinister. When he enters the room he stands in the dark shadows. This paired with his all black outfit shows us that he is not friendly and is going to be the antagonist during this film. As Fletcher just leaves whilst Andrew is playing, not saying anything proves that he has some kind of authority/power and is picky about who plays for him.
